Boost a post when you want a post that is already doing well to reach more people, fast. Use Ads Manager when you want a specific business result, like leads, sales or visits to a booking page, or when you want to test one version against another. Both are paid ads on the same bill. The difference is how much you get to decide. Here is how to choose in a minute, and what each one costs.

Both are ads, just built differently

Meta is clear on this: a boosted post is an ad. It is made from a post you already published, and it shows up as an ad in the places you choose. Meta calls it the simplest way to get a post in front of more people. It also says, in the same help article, that boosted posts do not have as many customization and detailed targeting options as an ad built in Ads Manager.

So the real question is not which one works. It is whether your goal fits inside the simpler tool.

The differences that matter for a small business

Boost a post when

  • The post already proved itself. It got more comments, shares or messages than usual without any money behind it. Paying to show it to more people nearby is a sensible bet.
  • The goal is to be seen. A new location, new hours, a seasonal menu, an event this weekend. Meta itself says boosting suits engagement and brand awareness.
  • It is your first ad. A boost risks little: one post, a small budget, a few days. You learn how the bill and the results look before you build anything bigger.
  • You have ten minutes and $20. For a small, short push, Ads Manager is more tool than you need.

Use Ads Manager when

  • You want leads or sales you can count. Meta lists leads and sales as objectives of the full ads system, not of a boost. If success means quote requests or bookings, start here.
  • You want to know what works. Meta advises against testing by switching ads on and off by hand, because the audiences overlap and the results are unreliable. Its A/B test tool splits the audience evenly instead.
  • The ad should not look like a post. A carousel of five services, or a short video with an offer and a clear button, is made in Ads Manager.
  • You will run ads every month. Several ads in one campaign, a budget you can see in one place and a report you can read are worth the extra setup.

What a boost costs

You choose the budget yourself. When you boost from a Facebook Page, Meta asks for a duration and a daily budget, and suggests one if you are not sure. That daily budget follows the same rules as any Meta ad, including that Meta may spend more than it on a good day and less on a slow one. We explain those rules, and how to pick a number, in How much should a small business spend on Facebook ads?

One cost is easy to avoid. Since February 2024, when you boost in the Facebook or Instagram app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple may take a service fee of 30% of the ad payment. The fee goes to Apple, not to Meta, and the ad does not reach more people because of it. Boost from a computer instead, or from the Facebook or Instagram website in your phone's browser.

Three things to check before you press Boost

  1. The goal. If you want calls or bookings, an engagement goal will happily get you likes instead. Pick the goal that matches what you want people to do.
  2. The audience. Read who Meta suggests before you accept it. For a local business, people who live too far away to visit are wasted money.
  3. The category. If the ad is about financial products or services, employment, housing, or social issues, elections or politics, Meta asks you to turn on Special Ad Category in the boost settings. A job opening counts as employment.

A sensible way to use both

Many owners never need to choose once and for all. Post regularly, watch which posts people respond to, and boost the best one or two a month with a small budget. When you want a steady flow of leads or bookings, that is the moment to build a proper campaign in Ads Manager, with a clear offer and two or three ads to compare.

If you are happy boosting on your own, keep going, and if you only need better material to boost, our Ad Creative Pack is a one-time set of ready-made ads. If you would rather have the campaigns built and watched for you, our Facebook & Instagram Ads service starts at $99 a month, with the ad budget paid by you straight to Meta. Both are on our pricing page.
