Somebody is going to help with your Facebook Page: a new employee, your niece, a freelancer, an agency. The quick way is to text them your password. Please do not. Facebook has proper ways to share a Page. They take about two minutes, and you can undo them at any time.
Why not just share the password
- Your Page lives inside your personal Facebook account. Whoever has the password also has your private messages, your friends list and every other Page you manage.
- You cannot take a password back. You can only change it, and then everybody else who used it is locked out as well.
- Facebook may ask for a security code that goes to your phone, usually at the worst possible moment.
- Nobody can tell afterwards who posted what.
The four kinds of access
| Kind of access | What they can do | Right for |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook access with full control | Everything you can: content, messages, ads, settings, giving access to others, deleting the Page | A co-owner. Nobody else |
| Facebook access with partial control | Manage the Page directly on Facebook, but not who has access and not the critical settings | A trusted employee |
| Task access | Work through tools such as Meta Business Suite or Ads Manager. They cannot switch into the Page itself | Someone who only posts, replies or runs ads |
| Partner access | Another business works on your Page from its own business account, with the permissions you tick | An agency, or a service like ours |
The rule of thumb: give the smallest kind that lets the person do their job. You can always add more later.
Give a person access, on a computer
These steps are for a Page you manage directly on Facebook.
- Click your profile picture in the top right and switch into your Page.
- Open Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- In the menu on the left choose Page setup, then Page access.
- Click Add New next to Facebook access or next to task access.
- Type the person's name or e-mail address and pick them from the list.
- Choose what they can do. Leave full control off unless they are a co-owner.
- Click Give access and confirm with your own Facebook password.
On a phone
The same Page access screen exists in the Facebook app, inside your Page's settings, and in the Meta Business Suite app. The labels move around between app versions. If you cannot find it within a minute, switch to a computer: there it is always under Page setup.
If your Page is in a business portfolio
When a Page has been added to a business portfolio in Meta Business Suite (the older name was Business Manager), access is handed out there:
- Open Meta Business Suite and go to Settings.
- Choose Accounts, then Pages, and select your Page.
- Click Assign people and pick the person.
- Choose what they can do, then click Assign.
Give an agency access as a partner
For another business, use partner access. You need their business ID: a long number they can send you.
- In Meta Business Suite open Settings.
- Under Users choose Partners, then click Add.
- Choose "Give a partner access to your assets" and paste their business ID.
- Tick your Page, and your Instagram account if they will post there too.
- Switch on partial access: content, community activity, messages, ads and insights. Leave full control off.
- Click Assign assets.
Start this from your side, with an ID you asked for. Do not accept partner requests that arrive by e-mail from businesses you do not know. We explain why in Facebook Business Manager partner request: real, or a scam?
How to take access back
- A person: open Page access again, find their name, open the menu next to it and choose Remove access.
- A partner: Settings, then Users, then Partners. Click the partner's name, then Remove.
A two-minute check to do once a year
- Open Page access and read every name. Remove former employees and agencies you no longer work with.
- Make sure two people you trust have full control, so a lost phone does not lock the business out.
- Ask everyone on the list to turn on two-factor authentication.
Meta renames buttons now and then. If a step here no longer matches your screen, Meta's own help pages, linked below, have the current wording.
Stuck anyway? Every one of our plans includes a free 20-minute setup call: you share your screen and we connect your accounts together. See what is included.
