Three to five times a week is the answer the best public data supports. But the number matters less than whether you can keep it up in a busy month. Here is what the research says, a realistic rhythm for each network, and what it takes in practice.

What the data says

In August 2025 Buffer published an analysis of 2.1 million Instagram posts from more than 102,000 accounts. It looked at how follower growth and reach changed with the number of posts in a week:

Posts in a weekFollower growth rateReach per post
1 to 2+0.12%the baseline
3 to 5+0.26%about 12% higher
6 to 9+0.44%about 18% higher
10 or more+0.66%about 24% higher

Two things stand out. Going from one or two posts a week to three to five more than doubles how fast an account grows. And every step after that still helps, but by less each time. Buffer's own conclusion is that three to five posts a week is "likely the sweet spot" for growth without burning out.

A third finding matters more to a small business than any row in the table: in weeks with no posts at all, accounts grew more slowly than they usually do. A silent feed does not stand still. It slips.

A Reel is a post like any other, so the Reels in the table are part of your three to five, not on top of them.

You will find guides that ask for far more. SocialChamp, for example, lists one to two posts a day on Facebook and several videos a day on TikTok. Numbers like that come from accounts with a content team behind them. For a business where the owner is also the photographer, they are a recipe for quitting in week three.

Consistency beats intensity

Buffer ends its study with a sentence worth pinning above the counter: "the best posting schedule is one you can stick to consistently." Twelve posts spread across a month do more for you than twelve posts in one enthusiastic week followed by silence.

So pick the number you can keep in your worst month, not in your best one. For most owner-run businesses that is two to four posts a week.

What three posts a week really takes

Three posts a week is about 13 posts a month. You do not need 13 ideas. You need about 20 minutes a week with your phone:

  • one photo of finished work
  • one photo of work in progress
  • one photo of a person: you, someone on the team, a happy customer who said yes
  • one short clip, ten seconds is plenty
  • one detail a customer would never see otherwise: the delivery, the tools, the early morning

That is five pieces a week from one walk through your own business. Everything after that, choosing, editing, writing and scheduling, is desk work, and desk work can be handed off.

Pick your number

  • Two posts a week keeps the lights on: people who look you up see a business that is open and active.
  • Three to four posts a week is the range the data rewards, and the one we recommend to most customers.
  • A post every day makes sense when there is something new every day: a menu, fresh stock, a full calendar of events.

Our plans are built around these three rhythms: Starter (8 posts a month), Growth (15 posts a month) and Daily (30 posts a month). You send the photos, we make the posts and publish them on schedule. See the plans.
