Meta Business Suite is Meta's free tool for running a business on Facebook and Instagram from one screen. You use it to plan and schedule posts, answer messages from both apps in one inbox, and see how your posts are doing. If you post to Facebook and Instagram for your business, it is worth knowing, even if you never open it every day. Here is what it does, what it is often confused with, and an honest answer to whether you need it.
What it does, in plain words
Meta describes Business Suite as a place where small businesses and creators can manage their connected Facebook and Instagram accounts in one place, for free. It works in a web browser at business.facebook.com and as a phone app. In practice it does five jobs:
| Job | Where you find it | What it saves you |
|---|---|---|
| Post now or later | Content | Writing a post once and sending it to your Page and your Instagram account at a time you pick |
| See the month ahead | Planner | A calendar of everything published and scheduled, by week or by month |
| Answer people | Inbox | Messages and comments from your Facebook Page, Messenger and Instagram in one list, plus WhatsApp if you use a WhatsApp Business account |
| Check results | Insights | Which posts people saw and reacted to, and who your audience is |
| Run a simple ad | Ads | Boosting a post or making a basic ad without learning a bigger tool |
The inbox is the part many owners end up using the most. A customer who asks about your hours on Instagram and another who asks about prices on Facebook land in the same list, so neither waits because you forgot to check the other app. Inbox can also send automatic answers to the questions people ask all the time.
Three names that get mixed up
Meta has renamed its business tools more than once, so the same thing can go by different names depending on who you ask. Here is the short version:
- Meta Business Suite is the place where you do the daily work: posts, messages, insights.
- Business portfolio is the container that holds your business's Page, Instagram account and ad account, and decides who may touch them. Until 2024 it was called a Business Manager account. In January 2024 Meta announced that "Meta Business Accounts, sometimes known as Business Manager accounts, are now called business portfolios."
- Ads Manager is the full tool for ads, with more ways to choose who sees an ad and more detailed reports. Business Suite links to it.
So when someone asks "Business Manager or Business Suite?", the answer is that they are not rivals. The portfolio is the filing cabinet; Business Suite is the desk where you work with what is in it.
Do you need it? A quick decision guide
You probably do want it if:
- You post to both Facebook and Instagram and are tired of doing everything twice.
- You like to sit down once a week and schedule the next few days, instead of posting on the spot.
- Messages slip through the cracks because they arrive in two different apps.
- Someone else helps you: an employee, a freelancer or an agency. Giving them access through Meta's tools is far safer than sharing your password.
- You want to try a small ad now and then without learning Ads Manager.
You can probably skip it, at least for now, if:
- You only use Instagram and post from your phone when something happens. The Instagram app already lets you post, reply and see basic numbers.
- Your Facebook Page is a placeholder you update twice a year.
- Your main channels are TikTok, YouTube or your Google profile. Business Suite only covers Meta's apps.
Even in the "skip" group, it is a good idea to open it once and check that you can get in. The day you hire help, or the day something goes wrong with your Page, you will be glad the door is already open.
What it will not do for you
Business Suite is a tool, not a helper. It will hold a post until Tuesday at 11, but it will not take the photo, write the caption or notice that you have not posted in three weeks. It also cannot tell you what is worth posting. Two more things to know:
- Insights describe the past. They show what worked last month, not what to do next. Use them to repeat what got a response, not to chase every number.
- Simple ads are simple on purpose. Boosting a post from Business Suite is fine for a small test. When you want to target past customers or compare two versions of an ad, Meta itself points you to Ads Manager.
How to start
- Make sure your business has a Facebook Page and that you manage it from your own Facebook account. Meta's help page says a Page is the first step.
- On a computer, go to business.facebook.com and log in with that same Facebook account. On a phone, install the free Meta Business Suite app.
- Pick your Page from the menu in the top left. If your Instagram business account is already linked to the Page, it shows up next to it.
- Open Planner to see what has been posted so far, then open Inbox and read anything waiting for an answer.
- If you see a message about creating a business portfolio, read the next section before you click.
When the setup gets in the way
For many owners the hard part is not Business Suite itself. It is what sits behind it: a Page made years ago by a former employee, an Instagram account that will not link, an ad account nobody can find, two portfolios with half the assets in each. That is the moment people start sharing passwords, which is exactly what you should avoid.
If that sounds familiar, our Business Manager Setup is a one-time job for $99: on one video call you click and we guide, and at the end you have a business portfolio in your name with your Page, Instagram account and ad account connected. You stay the owner of everything, and we never ask for a password. If you already have a working portfolio, you do not need it. Details are on the pricing page.
