When Meta Business Suite is not posting to Instagram, the cause is almost never a mystery bug. It is usually one of six things: a Meta outage, the wrong kind of Instagram account, a broken link between Instagram and your Facebook Page, missing permission, a type of post Instagram does not accept from Business Suite, or a restriction on the account. Work through them in this order. The first three take a minute each.

First, find out what kind of failure it is

How it fails tells you where to look.

Check 1: is it Meta, not you?

Meta runs a public status page at metastatus.com. It lists Meta Business Suite as its own line, next to Ads Manager and the other business tools, with "No known issues" when everything is fine.

If Business Suite shows a problem there, stop troubleshooting. Save your post as a draft and try again later. Changing settings during an outage only adds new problems once the outage is over.

Check 2: is your Instagram a professional account?

Business Suite works with professional Instagram accounts, which come in two kinds: business and creator. Meta's help pages say it plainly: you can only add a professional Instagram account to a business portfolio, and only a professional account can be connected to a Facebook Page. If yours is still a personal account, Meta asks you to switch it to a professional one during the connecting steps, so the fix is to make that switch first and then connect.

Check 3: are Instagram and your Page still connected?

This is the most common cause when Facebook gets your post and Instagram does not. According to Meta, connecting the two needs three things:

  • a professional Instagram account
  • full control of the Facebook Page
  • the Instagram account in the same business portfolio as the Page

That last point trips people up. An Instagram account can be in only one business portfolio at a time. If a former agency or a past employee once added your Instagram to their portfolio, it may still sit there, and your own Business Suite cannot post to it until it is removed from theirs.

To check the connection from your phone, open the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap Edit profile. Scroll to Public business information (on a creator account it is Profile information) and tap Page. If no Page is shown, tap Connect or create and follow the steps. You will be asked to log in to Facebook, which is how Meta confirms that your personal account has access to the Page.

Meta adds a note worth knowing: once Instagram and a Page are connected, anyone with access to either one can manage both. Look at who has access to your Page before you connect. Our article on giving someone access to your Instagram business account explains the kinds of access.

Check 4: do you have permission to post?

Business Suite only lets you publish to an account you have the right access to. Meta's help pages list two options that work: full control of the Instagram account, or content permission for it.

If someone else set up the business portfolio, ask them to open Settings in Business Suite, find your name and look at what you were given for the Instagram account. People often get access to the Facebook Page but not to Instagram, which matches the symptom exactly: Facebook works, Instagram is not in the list.

Meta's troubleshooting page also lists two reasons that only affect portfolios with more than one admin. You need full control of the business portfolio to add an Instagram account to it, and even then another admin with full control may have to approve the request. That approval waits under Requests in Business Suite's Settings, and nothing happens until someone clicks it.

Check 5: is it a post Instagram accepts from Business Suite?

Some things you can make in Business Suite only work on Facebook. Meta's help page on reels lists two:

  • You cannot create a reel from photos if you are posting to Instagram. A photo slideshow reel will publish to your Page, but not to Instagram.
  • The editing step, where you add or change audio, change the shape of the video or trim it, is only there when you post to Facebook.

So if you built a reel from five photos and added a song in Business Suite, the Instagram option is not broken. For Instagram, upload a finished video instead, with the music already in it, or make the reel in the Instagram app itself.

While you are in Business Suite, open Content in the left menu and then the Posts and reels tab. Posts are sorted by status: Published, Scheduled, Drafts, Expiring and Expired. A post that sits in Drafts was never sent anywhere, which is a common mix-up when the last button you clicked was Finish later.

Check 6: is there a restriction on the account?

If none of the above fits, look for a restriction. Meta says you can be blocked from parts of its tools when there is a violation of its policies on your business portfolio, your Page, your ad account or your own Facebook account. Business Support Home shows an overview of your account status and any open issues, and some decisions can be appealed from there.

A restriction can also be the first sign of a break-in. If you see posts you did not write or a name you do not recognize in your access list, go to our Facebook Page hacked checklist first and come back to posting later.

If you are still stuck

  • Try Business Suite on a computer if you were using the phone app, or the other way around. If it works on one, the problem is the app version, not your account.
  • Log out of Facebook and log back in, then open Business Suite again.
  • Post that day's photo straight from the Instagram app, so your customers are not left with a quiet feed while you sort it out.

If the words "business portfolio" are still new to you, our guide to what Meta Business Suite is explains how the pieces fit together. Meta renames buttons from time to time, so if a step here does not match your screen, the help pages linked below have the current wording.

Or let someone else do the posting

Every one of our plans includes help getting set up: we connect your accounts with you, step by step (how setup works). After that we make the posts from your photos, you approve them, and we publish them to Instagram and Facebook for you. When something stops posting, we are the ones who notice and fix it.
